Haas has stunned the Mexico City paddock by benching Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, drafting in reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa for an unexpected Formula 1 race debut. The American squad confirmed it had sought and received formal dispensation from the FIA to substitute Ocon ahead of Saturday's running at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, but offered zero operational explanation for the sudden removal of its lead driver.

In a tersely worded announcement, Haas revealed that Hirakawa would partner Oliver Bearman across final practice, qualifying and Sunday's 71-lap Grand Prix. The team swiftly shut down further inquiries, stating plainly that no further statements would be made at this time. With paddock speculation immediately swirling around Ocon's physical wellbeing, British outlet RaceFans reported that Haas had explicitly confirmed the French driver is not suffering from illness, deepening the mystery surrounding his abrupt exclusion.

The decision follows an uneasy Friday for Ocon, who concluded the second practice session in 13th place, marginally ahead of team-mate Bearman. During that session, Ocon had voiced clear dissatisfaction over team radio to his race engineer, Laura Mueller, questioning the squad's chosen tyre strategy. While frustration over run plans is hardly rare in modern grand prix practice, the lack of an official medical justification led Italian publication FormulaPassion to suggest that Haas may have imposed a disciplinary benching, unless serious and undisclosed personal matters forced the change.

Stepping into the breach is 32-year-old Hirakawa, who now faces an intense trial at altitude. The Japanese driver has built a formidable endurance pedigree, claiming two World Endurance Championship titles and an outright victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Toyota. Hirakawa is not entirely unfamiliar with the current Haas machinery, having already piloted the VF-26 during Friday's opening practice session in Mexico, where he ended up 15th on the timesheets.

Friday's initial outing marked Hirakawa's third free practice appearance of the 2026 season for Haas and the ninth official Formula 1 practice outing of his career. Taking the wheel for a full grand prix weekend, however, represents an entirely different challenge. The Toyota-backed veteran must adapt to competitive qualifying and wheel-to-wheel race mileage on short notice alongside the rookie Bearman, thrusting him into an intense spotlight as Haas fights for points in the midfield.

For Ocon, the sideline shock carries uncomfortable echoes of his previous contract exit. The Frenchman was already confirmed to be leaving Haas at the conclusion of the 2026 campaign, with the team having recently announced that Ferrari academy product Rafael Câmara will take his seat for 2027. A similar scenario unfolded during Ocon's final weeks at Alpine in 2024, when the Enstone-based outfit stood him down ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi once their impending split had been formalised.

Whether this sudden Mexican benching marks the permanent conclusion of Ocon's tenure with Haas remains unresolved. Haas has not clarified whether Hirakawa will retain the cockpit for the final four races following the Mexico City round, nor has the team given any hint as to when Ocon might return to the garage. With doors closed and communications silenced in the Haas motorhome, the paddock is left watching an awkward standoff that leaves Ocon's immediate racing future in limbo.
