Lewis Hamilton produced a remarkable recovery drive to salvage a podium finish at the chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix held at Sepang, steering clear of a complete disaster after Ferrari committed to a disastrous early tyre strategy. Starting from second on the grid, the seven-time world champion found his race instantly compromised when heavy rain fell before the start and triggered a power loss that forced him to restart his car on the track.

While the grid sorted through the initial drama and gathered in the pit lane, a debate erupted over which compound to run as the rain persisted. Hamilton inspected the ground and warned his team that the circuit remained thoroughly wet, yet the pit wall opted to gamble on soft slick tyres under the assumption that the track would dry rapidly. When the blankets came off and rival cars rolled out on intermediate rubber, the scale of the strategic miscalculation became immediately apparent.

As the race resumed, Hamilton was swallowed up by the pack and plummeted toward the back of the field, dropping over a minute behind the leaders as cars streamed past him in the wet spray. Trapped on the wrong compound, the veteran driver adopted a pragmatic mindset and decided to stay out on track to wait for the weather to turn. Once the surface finally dried out, the pace of the Ferrari returned and Hamilton began picking off opponents with strong support from his pit crew.

Hamilton completed his improbable climb back through the order by passing Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar for third place with just three laps remaining, securing his seventh podium finish of the season. When asked afterward what he planned to say to the team during their debrief, the British driver offered a lighthearted response about skipping future casino trips with his strategists. He praised the relentless work ethic of his mechanics and engineers while acknowledging that the Scuderia still has clear areas to improve.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur openly admitted that the team chose the wrong side of the fence when half the field gambled on slicks and the other half opted for intermediates. Vasseur noted that evaluating conditions from the pit lane during a chaotic wet start is notoriously difficult, though he conceded the ultimate call was incorrect. Despite the early setback, the team boss praised the underlying performance that allowed both cars to fight back from the very rear of the grid.

At the front of the field, Max Verstappen secured his first victory of the 2026 season for Red Bull in a turbulent afternoon that mixed heavy rain with drying asphalt. Behind the winner, Andrea Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the drivers championship by finishing in second place. The young Italian capitalized on another major twist in the intra-team battle at Mercedes as team-mate George Russell suffered a heartbreaking retirement due to an engine failure.

The mechanical failure leaves Russell trailing Antonelli by 84 points in the championship standings with only seven rounds remaining in the season. Formula 1 now packs its equipment and heads directly to the Marina Bay Street Circuit for the Singapore Grand Prix, marking the third and final leg of the current grueling triple-header.
