Jan Przyrowski takes maiden FREC victory as Hockenheim title battle goes to Sunday

Jan Przyrowski delivered a commanding performance to claim his first victory in the inaugural FIA Formula Regional European Championship at Hockenheim, establishing the eleventh different winner of the season. The Polish racer converted strong practice pace into an unblemished drive, leading all eighteen laps of the opening race from the second row of the grid. While Przyrowski controlled the front of the field, a chaotic afternoon unfolded behind him, setting up a four-way title showdown for Sunday's finale.

The championship battle took a significant twist at the very first corner when pole-sitter Sebastian Wheldon and title rival Emanuele Olivieri collided. Olivieri attempted an outside move alongside his American rival into Turn 1, resulting in contact that forced the Italian off the track and out of the race on the spot. Wheldon managed to continue but dropped to the back of the field, compounding a difficult afternoon that ultimately yielded no points.

Stewards scrutinised the opening-lap incident and handed Wheldon a ten-second time penalty. The MP Motorsport driver received an additional five-second penalty later in the race for leaving the track and gaining an unfair advantage, eventually classified in twenty-second position. Despite his early exit, Olivieri retains the provisional championship lead, though his advantage at the top of the standings has been slashed to just seven points.

Capitalising on the early drama, Kean Nakamura-Berta steered his Prema machinery through the chaos to secure second place. The podium finish elevates Nakamura-Berta to second in the drivers' standings, moving him past Wheldon and positioning him within striking distance of Olivieri. Rashid Al Dhaheri completed the podium in third for R-ace GP after a race of attrition and steady progress through the points-paying positions.

Al Dhaheri benefited from late-race misfortune for Tomass Štolcermanis, who retired near the end of the encounter while running in podium contention. The resulting shuffle allowed Zhenrui Chi and Maksimilian Popov to fourth and fifth respectively. Behind them, Oleksandr Bondarev crossed the line as the highest-ranked rookie in eighth position for Van Amersfoort Racing, ahead of Miguel Costa and Salim Hanna.

With twenty points covering the top four contenders in the standings and twenty-eight points still available across Sunday's second qualifying session and race, the championship remains entirely unresolved. Nakamura-Berta acknowledged the strategic importance of his result while noting the unpredictable threat of potential rain. Al Dhaheri admitted that fortune favoured his recovery from a difficult start to the weekend, leaving the title chase finely balanced.

While the individual crown will be decided on Sunday, R-ace GP successfully wrapped up the Teams' championship before the final day of track action. Sunday's schedule opens with the second qualifying session at 09:40 local time, followed by the definitive season-closing race at 16:15. The concluding battles of the newly established second-tier category will determine who inherits the inaugural driver trophy.
