Kristoffersson closes on European rallycross title with Lousada victory

Johan Kristoffersson took a decisive step towards securing his maiden FIA European Rallycross Championship crown by dominating the opening leg of the season finale at Lousada. Winning his third victory of the campaign, the Swede capitalized on a disastrous afternoon for his primary title rival, Andreas Bakkerud, to stretch his advantage to 36 points with only 40 points remaining on the table for Sunday's final round.
The opening stages of the weekend offered little hint of the commanding performance that would follow. Kristoffersson struggled with a sluggish launch in the first qualifying heat and subsequently lost ground to Bakkerud in a direct duel during Q2. That early setback left the Volkswagen driver fourth in the intermediate classification, though it inadvertently handed him a clean track and pole position for the third qualifying heat.
Capitalizing on that tactical reprieve in scorching northern Portuguese conditions, Kristoffersson delivered a flawless run to claim top qualifier honors. Behind him, the qualification heats erupted into chaos when a Turn One collision eliminated Juha Rytkönen and Ole Christian Veiby on the spot. The resulting puncture severely hampered Veiby and began a cascade of misfortune that ultimately derailed the Norwegian title contender's day.
Bakkerud fared no better as the afternoon progressed. A combative start in his qualifying group ended when the Norwegian drifted wide into the wall alongside Casper Jansson, picking up a terminal puncture that kept him out of the semi-final cut entirely. This abrupt exit completely transformed the championship picture, turning a one-point deficit at the start of the day into a comfortable cushion for the Kristoffersson Motorsport star.
As daylight faded over the circuit, Kristoffersson comfortably fended off Fabien Pailler in their semi-final before converting pole position into a lights-to-flag victory in the feature final. Crossing the line more than twelve seconds clear of the chasing pack, the Swede delivered a masterclass in controlled racecraft. Patrick O’Donovan emerged as his closest challenger, steering his Team RX Racing Peugeot 208 to a career-best second place.
O'Donovan's trouble-free run rewarded consistent speed across all three heats, culminating in a strong front-row start and a runner-up finish less than two seconds adrift of the winner. Juha Rytkönen completed the podium in third place after successfully executing an early joker strategy to bypass Fabien Pailler. Rytkönen's podium finish, combined with Bakkerud's early elimination, significantly bolstered the Finn's aspirations for the runner-up spot in the final championship standings.
Reflecting on his journey to the top step of the podium, Kristoffersson noted that early setup struggles were successfully resolved to allow a clean run from the front. O’Donovan admitted he briefly contemplated a passing maneuver into the hairpins before deciding against risking a collision with the championship leader. With the second leg of the Lousada double-header scheduled for Sunday morning, the remaining competitors face a compressed window to overturn the standings before the European season concludes.
