Kimi Antonelli delivered a statement performance at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, charging through the field from 19th on the grid to claim an emotional home victory. The Mercedes driver overcame an engine-related grid penalty and a dramatic 53-lap encounter to extend his championship lead over teammate George Russell to 66 points. Russell crossed the finish line 3.857 seconds behind the winner, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen completed the podium in third place.
The afternoon began with drama at the opening chicane as Charles Leclerc forced Lewis Hamilton wide onto the grass, dropping the seven-time champion down the order. Moments later, pole-sitter Pierre Gasly seized the early lead for Alpine before a red flag was deployed on the second lap. Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari exiting the final corner and smashed heavily into the barriers, resulting in a temporary stoppage while marshals repaired the infrastructure. Leclerc walked away unhurt from the high-speed crash.
At the restart, Russell resumed command at the front of the field while Antonelli continued a blistering recovery drive through the midfield. The Italian rookie climbed seven places by the end of the initial laps and was soon engaged in intense battles with the leading pack. Utilizing differing battery deployment and overtaking modes on the hybrid power units, the front-runners swapped positions in rapid succession. Verstappen briefly captured the lead before Russell fought back, with Antonelli hunting both drivers down.
A crucial tactical shift occurred when Lance Stroll retired his Aston Martin due to a hydraulics failure, triggering a virtual safety car. While Russell elected to stay out on older rubber to nurse his tyres to the finish, Antonelli and Verstappen dived into the pit lane for fresh medium tyres. Rejoining down the order in sixth place, Antonelli carved past Hamilton and the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to close down a 15-second deficit to his leading teammate.
Russell began struggling significantly with tyre degradation as the laps wound down, allowing Antonelli to close to within striking distance. An initial attempt by Antonelli to pass into the first chicane on lap 49 ended with a lock-up and a brief excursion through the gravel trap, returning the position to Russell. However, the pace advantage proved decisive, and Antonelli executed a clean move between the Lesmo curves and Ascari on the subsequent tour to retake the lead permanently.
Behind the leading trio, Norris secured fourth place after a fierce late scrap with McLaren teammate Piastri, edging ahead by just 0.197 seconds. Hamilton recovered from his difficult opening lap to finish sixth ahead of Gasly, while Arvid Lindblad, Franco Colapinto, and Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the points-paying positions. Audi subsequently lodged an official appeal against the stewards regarding Tsunoda, claiming the Racing Bulls driver failed to enter the pit lane after causing an extra formation lap during the red flag procedure.
