Formula 1's Dutch Grand Prix was halted by a red flag on the opening lap following a severe accident involving home favourite Max Verstappen. Racing on a damp circuit, the Red Bull driver lost control of his car as he clipped the white line on the inside of Zandvoort's final corner. The heavy impact with the outside concrete barrier ended his race abruptly at the conclusion of the first lap.
Verstappen immediately communicated with his pit wall via team radio to confirm he was unhurt. The incident left his Red Bull chassis with substantial damage as the car rebounded across the asphalt. Competing drivers managed to steer clear of the stricken machine, though Audi competitor Gabriel Bortoleto spun independently at the same bend while attempting to navigate the tricky, damp racing line without hitting the barriers.
Track conditions had been precarious throughout the buildup after a heavy downpour soaked Zandvoort roughly forty-five minutes before the scheduled start. The circuit dried sufficiently to allow the entire grid to take the start on slick tyres, but lingering moisture caught out the local hero on the banked, flat-out Luyendyk corner leading onto the main straight. The race control team deployed the red flag immediately to clear the wreckage and inspect the impact zone.
At the moment the red flag stopped proceedings, Lando Norris held the lead from pole position for McLaren. Behind him, Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli gained an advantage over George Russell, while Charles Leclerc launched an aggressive start to leap ahead of Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton had previously made wheel-to-wheel contact with Verstappen during the opening melee before losing further ground to Oscar Piastri.
Official standings under the stoppage established the top ten order as Norris, Antonelli, Russell, Leclerc, Piastri, Hamilton, Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad, Pierre Gasly, and Franco Colapinto. Race control confirmed that the grand prix will resume with a standing restart, utilizing the precise grid order recorded as the field crossed the line at the end of the first lap.
This sudden exit marks a devastating conclusion for Verstappen at what is currently slated to be his final home appearance at Zandvoort. The championship leader's abrupt departure transforms the tactical landscape of the afternoon, leaving Norris in command at the front while the remaining contenders prepare for the upcoming restart under heavy scrutiny from the pit wall.
