McLaren to Debut Rotating 'H-Wing' Rear Assembly at Italian Grand Prix

Trackside attention at Monza will centre firmly on the rear of the McLaren this weekend as the Woking team prepares to unleash its own interpretation of the rotating rear wing. Officially branded by the squad as the H-Wing, the active aerodynamic structure is scheduled to make its competitive debut at the Italian Grand Prix. Both Autosport and Motorsport.com reported the planned roll-out ahead of opening practice, confirming that McLaren has finalised track-ready hardware following months of evaluation.

At the mechanical heart of the concept sits an assembly capable of turning a full 180 degrees on its axis. Instead of relying purely on conventional static profiles, the aerodynamic device switches between two distinct operational states depending on where the car is on the circuit. In high-speed straight-line sections, the wing profile flips into a dedicated straight mode to shed aerodynamic drag, whereas navigating bends prompts the structure to rotate into its cornering configuration to restore essential downforce.

Monza provides an unforgiving testing ground for such an extreme mechanical solution. With the Autodromo Nazionale Monza demanding peak terminal velocity along its long straights alongside stable braking into chicanes, the circuit naturally rewards any technical device that minimizes drag without sacrificing stability through the turns. By deploying an assembly that physically inverts rather than simply opening a modest flap, McLaren aims to exploit the fundamental aerodynamic trade-off that defines racing in the Royal Park.

The origin of the design traces back to pre-season preparations, when Ferrari caught the paddock off guard by unveiling an initial iteration during winter testing. Observing the Italian outfit run a rotating surface provided the catalyst for rival aerodynamic departments to assess the viability of the architecture. Rather than dismissing the concept as a winter testing anomaly, McLaren committed design resources toward engineering its own tailored interpretation of the inverted wing philosophy.

Translating that initial visual intelligence into race-ready components was not an overnight exercise. The Woking organisation spent substantial time refining the mechanical actuation and structural integrity required to flip the aerodynamic surfaces reliably under high loads. Early manufacturing yielded a track prototype earlier in the program, giving engineers preliminary physical data before validating the full production package for competitive usage at Monza.

By christening the assembly the H-Wing, McLaren has also established a distinct technical identity for its version of the rotating concept. While paddock observers have colloquially described the mechanism as an upside-down or rotating rear wing, McLaren’s specific moniker signals subtle structural or profile variations unique to its engineering office. How the H-Wing handles the rapid transitions between braking zones and acceleration phases will be closely monitored across Friday's practice sessions.

Bringing the upgrade to Monza also sets up a compelling technical benchmark against Ferrari on the Scuderia's home soil. Having witnessed the original concept on the red car months ago, McLaren now arrives in Italy ready to demonstrate how far its parallel development path has progressed. As practice begins, the stopwatch will deliver the first definitive verdict on whether the Woking squad's ambitious aerodynamic gamble delivers a tangible performance edge.
