Wheldon grabs Hockenheim pole as title fight reaches final showdown
Sebastian Wheldon seized pole position for the first race of the FIA FREC season finale at Hockenheim, slashing Emanuele Olivieri's championship lead to 18 points.

The championship battle in the inaugural FIA Formula Regional European Championship tightened significantly on Saturday morning when American driver Sebastian Wheldon secured pole position for the opening race of the season showdown at Hockenheim. Driving for MP Motorsport, Wheldon topped the Group A qualifying session with a benchmark lap time of 1m34.353s across the 4.574-kilometre German circuit. The performance allowed him to narrow the gap to championship leader Emanuele Olivieri to just 18 points heading into the decisive afternoon encounter.
Olivieri, competing for R-ace GP, set the pace in the separate Group B session to secure the other half of the front row alongside his title rival. The Italian driver acknowledged that he missed out on the overall pole by a narrow margin but expressed satisfaction with his starting position. Olivieri stated that his primary objective for the race is to finish ahead of Wheldon while focusing on his own rhythm and seizing any overtaking opportunities that arise.
Reflecting on his qualifying performance, Wheldon admitted he had not anticipated securing the overall pole position, noting that the second group typically enjoys faster track conditions. He emphasized the importance of a clean start, pointing out that the opening sequence into Turn 1 and the tight hairpin at Turn 6 are critical areas where races can easily become chaotic on the opening lap.
Behind the leading pair, Jan Przyrowski of RPM claimed third position on the grid after having set the fastest time during Friday practice. Prema Racing driver Tomass Štolcermanis qualified fourth overall, slotting in behind Przyrowski on the second row of the grid. Maksimilian Popov of Trident Motorsport and championship outsider Kean Nakamura-Berta secured the fifth and sixth starting slots respectively to round out the leading group.
Further down the top ten order, Rashid Al Dhaheri managed fourth place within Group A for R-ace GP, translating to a seventh-place start on the grid. He will be joined on the fourth row by MP Motorsport driver Zhenrui Chi. The competitive spread highlights the high stakes of the final weekend under the newly established FIA FREC regulations.
The 2026 season marks the championship's transition under the direct oversight of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile as part of the single-seater development ladder positioned directly above Formula 4. Organised by the Automobile Club d’Italia, the series utilizes the second-generation Tatuus T 326 chassis equipped with Pirelli tyres and engineered to mirror Formula 1 aerodynamic principles to facilitate closer racing.
A notable technological addition for the 2026 campaign is the integration of the Race Mode push-to-pass system. Developed through FIA research, the system grants drivers a cumulative allowance of 100 seconds per race to deploy maximum engine power via a steering wheel button. With the grid set and the championship hanging in the balance, competitors face an intense afternoon test as the inaugural season draws to its conclusion.
