Andrea Kimi Antonelli has confessed he has no personal recollection of Sebastian Vettel clinching his maiden Formula 1 world title in 2010, despite standing on the cusp of breaking the German driver's long-standing record this season. Just into his second year at the pinnacle of motorsport, the Mercedes driver could mathematically secure the championship crown as early as this weekend at the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Vettel established the benchmark as the youngest world champion in the history of the sport back in 2010 when he triumphed for Red Bull at the age of 23 during a tense four-way finale in Abu Dhabi. Should Antonelli seal the crown during the current campaign, he is set to shatter that age record by a margin of three years, rewriting a historical chapter that has remained untouched for well over a decade.
When questioned about the potential milestone during the pre-event media gathering ahead of the Austin weekend, the young Italian offered a candid and lighthearted reality check. Speaking alongside established veterans including Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli admitted that historical context rather than live memory forms his connection to Vettel's breakthrough achievement.
I do not remember that, Antonelli admitted during the press conference, noting that he was only four years old at the time. I am sorry. I remember I was playing with Hot Wheels, but I do not remember him clinching the title. He added that he later caught up with the historic footage, acknowledging the intense multi-driver battle involving Alonso, Webber, Hamilton and Vettel.
Although a maiden title mathematically remains on the table at the Circuit of the Americas, securing the required twenty-three-point swing over teammate George Russell presents an uphill battle. The Mercedes racer emphasized that his approach to the weekend remains unchanged despite the mounting spotlight, maintaining his usual focus rather than altering his preparations for the event.
I am in an incredible position, but definitely this year, with how things went and how I felt in the car during the weekends and also with the momentum, I thought that I could have had a chance this year to fight, Antonelli explained. Luckily, I am in a very good position right now. But I still have to keep going, and the mindset is always the same, which is whenever I go on track to be at the top and to try and win as much as possible.
Track action in Texas brought immediate technical hurdles when a loose seat inside his Mercedes cockpit disrupted the start of second practice, costing the squad roughly fifteen minutes of valuable running time. Once mechanics resolved the issue, Antonelli quickly found his rhythm to record the second-fastest lap of the session, slotting in just behind Charles Leclerc, who paced both Friday practices in his upgraded Ferrari.
Whether the championship celebration takes place under the Texas sun this weekend or at a later round in Brazil, Antonelli remains relaxed about the timeline. Whether I win the championship, whether I win it this weekend or next weekend, or in Brazil, let us see, he concluded.
