Romain Grosjean issues apology over Zak Brown's Piastri remarks

Former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean has issued a public apology for misunderstanding comments made by McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown concerning Oscar Piastri at the Spanish Grand Prix. Grosjean, who works as a television pundit for French broadcaster Canal+ and frequently appears on official F1TV broadcasts, found himself at the center of an online debate after his on-air analysis of qualifying in Madrid.

During Saturday's post-qualifying media commitments, Brown appeared on the F1TV broadcast alongside a panel of presenters that included Grosjean himself. The discussion turned to the performance differential inside the McLaren garage after Lando Norris secured pole position for the inaugural grand prix at the circuit, while his team-mate Piastri could manage only seventh on the grid, finishing four tenths slower than the pole-sitter.

When pressed by presenter Laura Winter to explain what Piastri was missing on his final flying lap compared to Norris, Brown offered a measured assessment of the session. He stated that Norris was operating on his absolute A-plus game and noted that there was likely nothing left on the table lap-time-wise for his compatriot. Brown added that Norris's exceptional effort prompted a reaction of sheer admiration, explicitly describing the lap as performance worthy of a world champion.

Addressing Piastri's deficit, Brown explained that the Australian driver had matched the pace throughout various practice sessions but simply failed to extract that final increment of performance during the decisive qualifying run. Despite being physically present during the initial exchange on the F1TV panel, Grosjean offered a dramatically different interpretation of those remarks the following day. While commentating on Sunday's grand prix for Canal+, the Frenchman told viewers that Brown had essentially taken a chainsaw to Piastri's performance. Grosjean further claimed on air that Brown had explicitly asserted that Norris was a world champion and a definitively superior driver to his team-mate.

Those televised assertions quickly spread across digital platforms, generating significant traction and sparking debate on social media throughout Sunday afternoon. As public scrutiny mounted over the alleged internal friction at McLaren, Grosjean addressed the growing controversy by taking to social media on Sunday evening to retract his previous statements and offer a formal apology.

Writing in his online statement, the former Lotus and Haas competitor admitted that he had completely misinterpreted the words spoken by the McLaren executive during the previous day's broadcast. Grosjean emphasized his awareness of how vital it is for both Zak Brown and the wider organization to maintain parity, fairness, and mutual respect between their competing drivers.

Concluding his public clarification, Grosjean turned his focus back to the sporting action of the weekend, noting that the Woking squad possessed the fastest machinery on track during the race despite suffering misfortune under a virtual safety car period.
