Honda Confirms Upgraded Engine Spec for Aston Martin Ahead of Dutch Grand Prix

Honda will introduce a heavily revised power unit for Aston Martin at Zandvoort, targeting faster combustion and lower internal friction under the FIA's development dispensation system.

Honda has broken its silence regarding a major power unit upgrade destined for Aston Martin at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix. Designated internally as a spec-two development, the revised engine represents the Japanese manufacturer's primary technical response to a demanding opening phase of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign.

Speaking on the scope of the project, Honda trackside general manager and chief engineer Shintaro Orihara outlined the key mechanical areas targeted by engineers at HRC's Sakura facility. Rather than a minor mapping tweak, the redesign focuses on core thermal efficiency, aiming to extract more usable power out of every combustion cycle while trimming parasitic drag inside the crankcase.

Accelerating flame propagation within the cylinder heads formed the central pillar of the engineering program. To accomplish this, Honda overhauled the pre-chamber ignition assembly and altered the surface geometry of the pistons. The revised crown contours are designed to optimize charge motion and pressure distribution, shortening the burning duration during peak compression.

Engineers also targeted internal friction to recover mechanical output previously lost to oil resistance and moving component contact. Revisions to the lubrication architecture alter how oil circulates through critical journals and bearings, lowering parasitic losses across the engine's operating rev range without compromising component durability under sustained race thermal loads.

The development cycle was made possible through the FIA's Additional Upgrade and Development Opportunities (ADUO) regulatory framework. Designed to allow power unit suppliers lagging more than four percent behind the grid's performance benchmark to introduce homologated revisions, the system provided Honda the legal scope required to implement structural internal changes mid-season.

Initial track validation occurred immediately after the Hungarian Grand Prix during an official filming day at the Hungaroring. That preliminary running allowed Honda technicians to verify thermal behavior and sensor calibration before committing the updated units to race allocation for Zandvoort's tight, banking-dominated layout.

While paddock rumors have pointed toward potential gains of up to 40 to 50 horsepower, Honda has refrained from issuing public performance figures. Orihara confirmed only that the bench testing at Sakura met all internal targets, cautioning that true competitive progress will be measured on track against rival power units.

For Aston Martin, the engine update complements the extensive spec-B aerodynamic and chassis package introduced in Budapest. Integrating faster combustion and reduced internal drag with updated bodywork gives the Silverstone team its most substantial double-sided performance push of the year as the paddock resumes racing in the Netherlands.
